Slow Cooker BBQ Ribs
This combines the best of two worlds - the delicious taste of BBQ with the ease of a "dump it and forget it" slow cooker meal. It's on high rotation in the farm kitchen. Best of all, you can customize your cook time according to how you like your ribs.
  • Prep Time:
  • Cook Time:
  • Servings: 6

Ingredients

  • (2 Cups) BBQ Sauce
  • (2 Tbsp) Brown Sugar
  • (3 Tbsp) Garlic, Minced
  • (2 tsp) Worcestershire Sauce
  • (2 tsp) Cayenne Pepper, Optional
  • (To Taste) Salt
  • (4 lbs.) Pork Spare Ribs

Directions

  • Place ribs on a large cutting board.
  • Turn the ribs over (meat side down) and locate the membrane, or the thin, clear skin that lines the bone. Using your finger or a sharp, small knife, pull the membrane off the bones.
  • Flip the ribs back over. Rub with salt to cover.
  • Combine the remaining ingredients - bbq sauce, brown sugar, garlic, Worcestershire cayenne pepper - in a small bowl. Mix well to combine, and brush onto the ribs. Save remaining sauce in the refrigerator to use for later.
  • Place the ribs in the slow cooker, cover with the lid and cook on the LOW setting for 7-9 hours or HIGH setting for 3-5 hours (see notes).
  • When ribs are tender and falling apart, transfer onto an oven tray (or baking sheet), lined with parchment paper. (Lift them carefully as the meat will be very tender and falling off the bone).
  • Pour half of the juices from the slow cooker bowl into the remaining sauce. Brush ribs with sauce and broil (grill) in preheated oven at 400°F (220°C) for about 10 minutes or until beginning to char and crisp on the edges.
  • Serve ribs with remaining sauce.

Notes

Cook times depend on the results you are looking for:

  • LOW: 7 HOURS / HIGH: 3 HOURS — Ribs that are soft but stay on the bone.
  • LOW: 9 HOURS / HIGH: 4-5 HOURS — Tender, fall apart ribs that melt in your mouth like butter.
